Last week, I’ve spent 3 days in Austria. I’ve decided to write a post per day spent there. So let’s start with the first day.
The reason why I’ve been to Austria is I’ve got a friend who’s an aupair there (and she also got a blog, if you would like to check it out!). When we realised, I’d be in Switzerland at the same time she would be in Austria, we immediately said we had to visit each other as those countries are next to each other. In January, she came to Switzerland to see me and celebrate her birthday. Now, it was my time to visit her in Austria.
Although, the journey is quite long and we’ve been struggling to find some time to organise that, as I usually ‘only’ got my weekends off. So, if it was to spend way more time on the road than actually with her in Austria, there was no point.
It was half term the past week though. And as an au pair, it means working more as the kids (just the 5yo girl in my case) don’t go to school during that week. As I worked more, my host family kindly gave me my Friday off. I could have used it to relax but as soon as I knew I had my friday off, I booked my tickets to visit Rosie in her austrian village.
Thanks to Goeuro, I found some really cheap tickets to Oberstdorf, which is in Germany but only a 45 minutes bus journey away from Baad, Austria. As I’ve already talked about in my post about tips for travelling, travelling overnight can be such a good alternative. You save money AND time. So instead of paying 350 euros the return to travel 7 hours during the day, I paid 85 euros the return to travel more than 11 hours, during the night. I had to change trains several times which didn’t help me to sleep at all. I think I managed to sleep 2 hours so I was knackered but it was so worth it. So please, stop saying travelling is expensive, just do it differently and it’ll become cheap.
Anyway, let’s get started about what I’ve done on Friday 1st March. I arrived around 1pm to my friend’s place. She works as an aupair for a family who runs a beautiful lodge in Baad. They’re adorable and I can’t thank them enough for their wonderful hospitality. I leave you the link to their website just here, if you’re ever going to Austria and look for a place to stay, you won’t regret it!
After taking a 30 minutes nap, I was ready to go exploring! It started to snow the morning I arrived and now it was snowing more and more. That didn’t stop us going for a walk. I was in Austria for the first time ever and it definitely felt like I was in a snow globe. Even though, it was so slippery due to the snow and I almost fell so many times (I swear, I didn’t fall!!), it was truly magical.
After our walk, it was around 5pm which means time to drink in Austria! As it’s quite a cold country, pubs/bars close early sooooo. After pre dinking, we went to the Umbrella bar. I wish I could share some pictures with you but I didn’t take any! Only videos which are way too embarrassing to share haha… I’ll leave you on those pictures I took ‘at night’ and stay tuned for Day 2 in Austria!
With love, Anaïs
