The power of music

Music. What a great “invention”. I mean, is it even possible not to like it? The range is so wide that everyone can find something they fancy. Films, ads, parties, videos, in the shops, shows, in the car, … music is everywhere. It’s part of our daily life. I don’t think it is even possible to live a day without being confronting to music at least once.

I find music really powerful. One note and it can completely change our mood, from sad to happy, from bored to dancing on the tables, from happy to nostalgic, etc. Listening to a certain song can dive us straight into a memory and that’s the thing I like the most about it. In a few seconds, we relive a moment of our life. It reminds us of people as well. That’s actually how I had the idea to write this post. In the past week, 2 of my closest friends sent me a song that reminded them of me. So here’s a few songs that I associate with people and why :

Rain – the script

I used to listen to this song a lot with my French friend in Oxford during my first year as an aupair. Every time I listen to it, it seems like I’m back into 2017 with Aurélie, living our lives in Oxford. We spent so much time together during that year. We travelled a lot together and even did our first tattoo together. Aurélie, if you’re reading this (I’m sure you are but still haha), I hope you know that I can’t wait to see you again. I miss our Sundays at Mc Donald’s haha.

Melody- Lost frequencies ft James Blunt

This song reminds me of Danique, my Dutch friend met in Corfu, Greece last summer. We used to go on the beach during our work breaks and had long talks about everything. We would put some music on in the background as well and it was one of the song we always listened to. I haven’t know her for long but I knew straight away that she would be a true friend. Always there to listen my drama, being crazy, exploring or drive a boat on our day off haha.

Burnin up – Jessy J

It was back in 2014 I think. I was studying to become a preschool teacher and it was my first “real” internship (I was replacing the teacher for 3 weeks with my own activities and projects with the kids). As my internship was in Belgium and I was living in France, one of my best friend said I could stay at her place during the internship as we were doing it at the same school. We were really nervous about it and what we did to relax and stop thinking about it during our breaks was putting this music really loud and dancing like crazy. I’m sure I have some embarrassing videos of us dancing and singing on that song haha.

Watsky – sloppy seconds

I met Marie-Caroline almost a year ago now. For many reasons, she came to live with us (my previous host family and I) in Oxford for 3 months. She arrived when I was at a strange stage of my life, I felt lonely and clearly loosing my sh*t because of some personnal problems. Anyway, she arrived at the right time, her and her constant good mood. We became friends really quickly and as we were basically house mates, we spent all of our free time together. We went out so many times and she made me discover that song that I love. I can’t listen to this song without thinking of her or all the crazy things we’ve done together!

Don’t let me down – The chainsmokers

I was about to leave for the UK when I started to listen to this song. My goddaughter/little sister (she was almost 6 at the time) and I were trying to spend as much time together as possible before I left. We were always listening to that song together and we decided that it would be “our song” so every time she would listen to it, she would think of me and vice versa. I wanted to make sure she wasn’t going to forget about me while I was away.

  1. Funny how a song can whisk you back to a place and time! For some reason, the song that does this to me the most is Sugar We’re Going Down by Fall Out Boy, I remember it playing when my best friend and I got a tattoo the summer we turned 18! Makes me feel well old now!

    1. Seems like such a nice memory though!!! x

    2. Love this post. I love how songs can evoke memories, the song build me up buttercup by the foundations reminds me of my time studying drama, it was sort of our theme song! x

      1. Thanks a lot!! x Don’t think I know that song, I’ll listen to it later for sure!

  2. It’s great that you have so many songs to associate with memories! Any song from Coldplay’s X and Y album weirdly reminds me of driving back from swimming lessons when I was younger haha xx

    1. How random haha, love it!! x

  4. One of my favorites is ‘Imagine’ and listening to it has always given me hope.
Loved the flow of this post and your list of songs 😊

    1. Such a nice song indeed! I used to sing it with my big sister on a karaoke game haha x

      1. That’s a sweet memory 😊

  5. Would you believe that there are people in the world who can’t stand music? It’s true – my younger brother is melophobic – meaning he has an aversion to music. The only kind he can really tolerate are video game soundtracks.

Personally, I have a Spotify playlist for every character in every single story I’ve ever written. I think that’s pretty telling. 🙂

    1. Wow, I actually had no idea about this!! Thanks for teaching me then x Hopefully he copes with it well!

  6. I have so many songs that remind me specifically of people, rather than memories, But reading this just made me realise again how well traveled you are and I am so jealous!! It’s so cute how you remembered your friends this way. I’m sure they are so touched, I thought it was so sweet x

    1. Don’t be jealous babe!! Thanks a lot for your comment and support ❤❤

  7. Seems like you and I share a lot of the same music tastes! Music really holds that essence of a film when we listen to it in association with big moments in our lives. It’s comfort, it is power.

    1. That’s cool! Indeed, I couldn’t agree more x

I love how songs can take you back in time. It’s amazing how they can really make memories. I remember dancing to Poker Face and Just Dance when I went clubbing in 2008 and 2009. There’s songs from that time that just take me back to my early 20s. Also, ones like Wannabe take me back to my childhood and making up dances to go with them!! I love music, so a lot of songs have a lot of memories for me!! This was a really great post – it’s great that you added these photos to it too!!

    1. That’s basically my favourite thing about music haha
Those seem like great memories; dancing in a club on Poker face haha
      Thanks a lot Kattie!!! x

  9. This is such a lovely post! I love that music can remind us of certain holidays or chapters in our lives, and remind us of being a specific age or on a particular journey. Catfish and the Bottlemen (a band I discovered in 2017) reminds me of the summer I came over to England and Germany, and driving in my car in Australia dreaming of my move back to the UK. It’s so great that different songs remind you of your friends, fab photos too! Sounds like you’ve made so many fun memories in different places X

Oh my gosh I love The Script and I completely forgot about the song Rain. I will definitely have to revisit that one and pop it on a playlist. Well for me it’s easy, my wedding song (Jason Marz I’m Yours). Think that speaks for itself haha. But you are so right, music is a great ‘invention’ and excellent for memory storage x

    1. Well now you’ll think about my post while listening to it hahah
Awwww, of course your wedding song, how cute! I love that song as well x
Thanks for commenting, means a lot xx

  15. Great post. I have a lot of memories connected to music, but most of the ones that stick in my mind are sad. (Not that this is always a bad thing.) Or tainted with regrets or people I’ve lost touch with. Most recently music makes me think of my baby which is awesome. Lovely to think about this though. Thanks x

    1. Oh I get what you mean, I’ve got some sad memories connected to music as well but wanted to focus on the positive on this post xx

  18. Some songs are so powerful! There are a few I’m not able to listen to because they remind me of certain things, but thank goodness there are some songs I listen to that I can attach into positive moments as well. Music is one of the greatest things we have 🙂

Couldn’t agree more on your last sentence!!

  19. So wonderful. Thank you..

  20. […] that day, I went to check my blog stats and was so disappointed. I felt like no one had read my new post. I stayed up until 1am to finish it on time. I felt irrelevant. Like why bother if no one reads? […]

  21. This is such a lovely post to read! It is so nice when songs bring back memories. Mine are often related to concerts and not necessarily specific moments. Although that there is one song, I think it’s called ‘I Might’ (or that’s what a really high pitched voice constantly says in the song haha) that makes me think of my vacation with my friends back in 2017, because it was the song that constantly returned on our playlist, even though we didn’t really like it haha.

  22. I love this post. Such a heart-warming read, music is so powerful! Wake me up by Avicii reminds me of my first days at uni and meeting pals that I now call my best friends for life xx

    1. Oh thanks a lot!
I love this song too!! Such a nice memory with your best fiend you’ve got there xx

  23. I love that music can have such a big impact on people and their lives. I have a few songs that remind me of people that I am or were close to. It’s always nice to hear them and remember.
Thanks so much for sharing. 🙂
